Exploring the history of JW Lees Harvest Ale
JW Lees has been brewing Harvest Ale, a Barley Wine, at its brewery in Manchester, England, since 1986. The beer is only brewed once a year and is still clamoured for by beer enthusiasts around the world. In this feature, penned by Adrian Tierney-Jones, we explore the history of the beer and the home of the brewery, which has been in the same family since 1828.
I spent the day at JW Lees brewery in Middleton, Manchester. We toured the brew house, packaging building, and conditioning cellar with brewhouse manager Paul Wood. The JW Lees team–including head brewer, MD, and marketing manager–then gave us a guided vertical tasting of their vintage Harvest Ale Barley Wines.
All photos were taken on-site at JW Lees brewery, with the exception of the bottle product shots, which were taken at home. Some of the photos included here were not used in the final story, but I've included them here for further reference.
